Please see the below video demonstrating the correct way to fit an engine seal.
As you will see in the demonstration, when threading the wire through the locking mechanism, it is important NOT to pull the seal tight (like you would a cable tie). You should be able to put a finger through the middle of the seal gap. The seal should be relatively loose fitting with 10 -15mm of cable left after trimming the excess.
